IMPORTANCE OF “MEDITATION” IN BUDDHISM

Through meditation an ordinary person can also turn into an extraordinary person. If you want the world as much as you want, you must first of all have yourself. That’s why the Buddha said, “Atta Dip Bhav” means first you wake up and then wake up the world. If you have mental imbalance, lack of self-confidence, then you leave the work even before you start and give up very soon. Our Scheduled Caste workers do social work with enthusiasm first but with time, as the enthusiasm starts decreasing, they leave the work and become inactive. Its opposite result also falls on our movement.

The work of change is the most difficult task. The workers have to face many adverse conditions while doing this work. In such a situation it is important for the mind to be strong and balanced. Sometimes we come close to victory and give up trying in despair and fail. Why do the people of present-day India appear so passive, hopeless and sad? Because they have stopped following the Buddha’s Dhamma.

By meditating on Dhamma, our mind becomes balanced, strong and firm, which increases our physical and mental efficiency, increases our self-confidence and we do not feel the need to rely on any imaginary deity. We happily become capable of completing the hard work easily. This is the reason, during the Buddhist period, India had become the first country in the world to develop. Building huge Stupas, Viharas, Statues, Stone Pillars, Universities and Caves was not such an easy task, but because of Dhamma, they could do such a difficult task. Even today, Buddhist nations like China, Japan, Korea, Singapore, Thailand, Ceylon have reached the peak of development due to Dhamma. Buddha’s Dhamma has developed in them self-confidence, humanism and right vision, on the basis of which these nations are able to do the most difficult tasks very easily. Therefore, he never felt the need of any other deity other than Buddha. We are not able to progress even after having thirty three crore gods in our country, because we are not able to understand Buddha and his Dhamma very well.

Tathagata Buddha, after preaching the Dhamma throughout the day, used to meditate at night before sleeping. Therefore, the tiredness and despair of the day would go away from his mind and after taking a good sleep, he used to do the work of preaching the Dhamma with equal joy the next day.

The Kung Fu warriors of China and the Samurai warriors of Japan are considered the most fierce and aggressive warriors in the world, as they develop their martial arts based on meditation. If we also want to become “skillful preachers” and “aggressive warriors” against the Brahmin system, then we also have to make the basis of “Dhamma Meditation”. Only then we will be able to change the system easily.
